OK so this is just a Fancy Schamancy way of saying-I made my own envelope’s to match! LOL! But I LOVE how it sounds, don’t you.
In this post I paired Papertrey Ink (Out on a limb), with Martha Stewart paper (the Candy Shoppe collection), and it was a COSMIC CONNECTION!
(Cosmic Connection-that’s a little word we use for Jay and I when we think/say the same thing at the same time, or kill our friends in a game. Corny inside joke I guess. I means an amazing combination of two things-thats us! hehehehe)
I always forget the IMPACT, a pretty envelope-made to match, can have on your creation and the presentation, until I see one stamped, or I create one to match.
My friend Renee is famous for also stamping her envelope’s. I love it, but am often too lazy to bother! I’m lucky I actually mail stuff out on occassion. My other friend Geny, she always lines the inside panel of her card, and stamps the inside! Its those extra little touches that makes me always say- AWE!
I recently made these cards, with matching envelope’s as a sample to go with my Envelope Tutorial <—click to view, for Scor-Pal, at CHA.
PLEASE note this formula is copyrighted by ME. Not to be submitted for contest/publication/tutorial elsewhere.
I was very upset to hear that my Onesie Card appeared the other day (the 23rd)on Stamper’s Showcase! That means that it was entered to win a contest, even after I posted a friendly reminder (after I was alerted someone tried to copy/paste my instructions, with their project for publication) that the template using my punch idea was not to be used for publication/contest. This is very disheartening to me, and really makes me question sharing certain things in the future.
EDITED TO ADD:
It it my “formula” that is copyrighted.
So you could not get paid for a tutorial or write up USING my formula. Please check out the site if that part confuses you. It will make sense if you see HOW I configure a way to make envelopes for every size.
You can make as many envelopes as you want. Be it using my formula or your own template.
There are MANY ways/templates.
But my FORMULA for creating envelopes for any size is what is owned by me-not the concept of making your own envelopes.
Hope that clears up some questions 😀
OK moving on-
This helps people SEE what the finished products can look like, using all sized cards, when you use my formula. I heard that people really liked them, so that made me so happy.
Once y9ou get going, you can really whip up a nice envelope in like 3 minutes! After the measuring is done, its a breeze.
All you need is a card/note to make an envelope for! Measure it, then follow the directions to get your size/formula for scoring. Then get creating.
Use your Scor-Pal, Scor-Tape, corner rounder, double sided or plain Paper, and a little creativity, then you are ready to go!
Here is a 2 X 3 note card, made using my rectangle scallop nestability
This is your standard A 2 size card-flower is on the closure.
This is a 5 1/2 squared card
So see how extremely SIMPLE each card is, but paired with that matching envelope, it becomes a more elegant presentation of your note-card/card. Makes quite the statement.
I find it nicer to use double sided paper. But you could certainly add a liner. That always looks elegant.
I would NOT use heavy card-stock. That is too bulky.
My envelopes are held together using the Scor- Tape. I love to add ribbon, scallops and/or flowers.
Well that’s it for now.
Ill be back tomorrow.
Till then.

Cosmic connection is right!!! WOW, those cards are gorgeous. I have had my eye on “out on a limb” for some time and think I will actually go and purchase that lovely set after seeing so many wonderful creations with it.
I’m sorry to hear about the onesie issue. I would get the name of the person and give her a call personally to discuss the issue. It really peeves me that people would not respect the fact that is isn’t their creation and steal someone else’s and claim it as their own. I think publications should ban a person from ever submitting anything to them if they find it has been pirated and maybe put a disclaimer of a fine to anyone who is found to be pirating (don’t know if they can do this legally, but hey, it seems like a good idea to me). Thank you for sharing your amazing creativity with us – I am amazed at what you come up with and wish I had just a few of your creative genes to help me out!!
Thanks for the envelope tutorial! It’s excellent, if i ever use it for anything i will be sure to give you the full credit!
The only cool pirate is a pirate that owns a parrot
Hi Lauren, love the cards, they are truly gorgeous. I too saw that another person had submitted your onesie and I thought, oh dear, they are going to be in trouble!! I don’t know anyone can get away with it as everyone knows that the idea is yours, even me from across the pond!! Its a dirty trick and I’m in agreement with the 1st comment, banning someone from ever being able to submit for publication. That should do it. Keep up the good work, its an inspiration to us without the creative genious. Best Wishes. Andrea
Hi Lauren,
I was *just* over there and saw the ‘onsie’ card and I immediately thought to myself, “that’s Lauren’s card!”. I’m so sorry. {{{HUGS}}} Shame on that person.
Your cards and matching envelopes are FABULOUS! They are so beautiful. I love the Cuttlebug. It’s one of the new ones, isn’t it? (mental note to self – find it!).
Big hugs to you! Gotta run. I have so much to do today – It’s my DS’s 16th birthday!
Hugs!
Renee
Morning Lauren!!
These cards with matching envelopes are gorgeous!!! I’ll have to give this a try!!! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas and inspiration you provide!!! You totally ROCK!!!
I’m soooo sorry about the ignorant person who submitted your idea for publication. That is just so wrong and hopefully it comes back to bite them!!! Hopefully they feel so ashamed of themself for doing it, but I highly doubt it. SOmeone that would steal anothers idea for personal gain, usually has no shame or guilt!!! BIG HUGS!!!
the cards and matching envelopes are beautiful, I make my own envelopes from a template but your design is fantastic.
Hey Lauren, I’m sorry to hear that someone submitted YOUR onsie. If I can recognize a Lauren card from a distance, I believe anyone can. My guess is that everyone involved knows it came from you. Again, thank you for sharing your expertise with us. I love the matching envelopes, and admire your creativity always. Your blog is one of the few I make time for, even if I have no time!!! You’re the best!
Fabulous sets!!! And thanks very much for the tutorial, I’ll be sure to have my parrot on my shoulder. Like Renee I also saw the “onesie” card and thought HEY! THAT’S LAUREN’S CARD!!!!! Not nice at all. I so enjoy your work and creativity and it would be AWFUL to have someone spoil your ability to share.
Gail
Hi Lauren,
Cute Pockkets!! Sorry about the onesie card too! I saw it and was like “For crying out lout how do people sleep at night!”. Great that you posted in on your blog but since her name is posted on Stampers Showcase I would try to contact her. One thought -(altho this does not make it acceptable by any means) she may not read your blog, she may have seen a CASE somewhere that did not give you proper credit and she may not have relized it was a Lauren original. Anyway I would totally try to contact her! (BTW can’t believe it only made stampers showcase and didn’t win! Karma maybe?LOL!!)
Love these Lauren! So cute! That DP is gorgeous. Thanks for the reminder about making envies to match…something I rarely do but you are right it adds that WOW to your card. Makes a great presentation that’s for sure!
I noticed that card in the Showcase the other day and thought….ugh not good…lol
I hope that one bad seed won’t wreck it for the rest of us that LOVE when you share your creativity! I’d understand though if you decided to stop sharing 🙂
Lauren,
These are just so classy looking! I am loving your blog and all your creativity! Thanks for inspiring those of us who are a little more challenged!
Thanks again for the template for the onsie card – I made these as a gift for a friend of ours!
Hi Lauren,
I have been lurking at your blog for a while now and I just wanted to pop in and say hi. You have a wonderful blog with so many creative ideas! These matching sets of cards and envies are pretty. I love your color choices!
Gorgeous cards and envies, Lauren! Cosmic is right! I did see the Onesie Card on SS – I’m sorry 🙁
Those cards are awesome and so elegant!!! I love those papers and the color, yum!!! You’re right, it a perfect match with “Out on a limb”.
I love all the scalloped edges etc…
Now about people stealing your art… do you think you could start changing your watermark? Maybe for special projects like that, you should put a big black watermark in plain view on the project? I know it will look ugly but we can see the “beauty within”! ;-)… It’s sad to have to come down to this but you have to do something… My guess is it’s the same person who entered all kind of contests and publications calls… It stinks, and make me upset that you share wonderful stuff with us and someone is using that for their personal gain. *shakes head*
Have a great day, let’s focus on the positive and your gorgeous cards for now…
Okay, so I went over and checked out the onesie card…shame on her (and we know her name)!!! She changed it just slightly….and you know what…it doesn’t come close to your style! It was yuck….if you can’t create on your own or give credit to those who help you…then you shouldn’t be creating! Some people!
You are fabulous and like I say and believe…it will come back to bite them!
Love your envelopes…it does make such a difference. I ordered a scor-pal last summer and love to use it for envies and box projects! It just takes a little time but makes a huge difference…I should do it more often.
Have a great day!
I just ordered the Scor-Pal this weekend 😀 I soooooo can’t wait for it to get here!!! You and your projects were a BIG reason for placing the order! Thank you so much for everything you share on your blog! These envelopes and matching cards are stunning.
I am sorry there was a bad apple in the bunch but there are so many more greatful caring crafters out here. I hope you’ll focus on them and try not to let those bad apples ruin your day. {{{HUGS}}}
These are beautiful! I’ll have to try this.
Hi Lauren! I just found your blog~ I am amazed at your talent!! I love how real you are. What a drag about the person who tried to pass off your stuff as hers. That is so not cool! I love the matching envelopes. I used t coordinate as well, but got lazy/ busy. Anyways, thought I would introduce myself! Kris Reynolds
WOW. What a gorgeous card and envelope! And thanks for the link to the pattern! I have ALWAYS struggled with making my own envelopes, especially for weird sized cards. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Oh my these are just beautiful, and it gives it that extra something to have such a lovely envelope with it!!! So sorry people aren’t respecting your wishes, I can understand how that would bum you out, hope that doesn’t stop you from sharing your lovely work!
Great cards and envelopes Lauren! Thanks for the shout-out! I try to always stamp my envelopes too but that doesn’t usually happen before I get ready to send them!!! I will have to try some of those envelopes!
These are gorgeous, I love them!
And I can’t believe that there are nasty people out there that would steal in the first place, but steal AFTER the reminder. Super stinky!!!!
I love the envelopes! You’re so right about the extra touches – I’m usually so happy to have finished a card that I’m too lazy to care about the envelope.
What is the stamper’s showcase? I’m so sorry that it happened – I love that your share your genius ideas and I’m sorry that a few people take advantage of that. HOpe you’ll keep sharing! Reading your blog and seeing the cool stuff you do makes my day! 🙂
These are just stunning, and the tutorial is great! Thank you so much for your help…
I am SO SORRY someone is stealing your designs. I know all artists have this problem, and it’s really too bad that people with no ethics submit a creation as their own. I know it must make your blood boil! SOOOO frustrating! I have read of other designers having problems with this, I’m sure I would just explode if someone did that to me (first, I would have to BE an artist, which I am not!!!)…Anyway, I hate to hear of this happening….
Have a great week, I hope Alexa is feeling ok from her chemo, and hope everyone is well otherwise. Take care! 😀 Oh, and hugs to Daisy!!!
Beautiful notecards and envelopes as usual!!
I just wanted to mention that although I wasn’t on stamper’s showcase, I was on a site this weekend and did see the onesie done a bit differently than yours, but there was a note under it that it was your template. So the world is starting to change finally!
These notecards and envelopes are just simply beautiful. They are everything that I want my work to be, but never seem to reach. Thank you for inspiring me. I appreciate your blog so very much.
Beautiful cards Lauren as usual !!!
Have a great week..
These are great….but no surprise coming from you!
Sorry you were “robbed” What is Stamper’s Showcase anyway?
Hi Lauren, the cards and envies are beautiful and you have inspired me to try the envies using the designer papers…they really do make the presentation more elegant.
I hope you have contacted SU concerning the demo who posted YOUR creation (which can be easily proved by your blog postings)…surely they should KNOW who the design originated with. Perhaps they do know, but we can hope they would take steps to discourage this from happening again. And I agree with those who have suggested you contact the person directly and just discuss your concerns with her….hopefully she would apologize and learn from this experience, and be more careful in the future.
Thanks so very much for sharing your creativity with us….the majority of us would always give you the credit.
Barb g
Hi Lauren
Love this, these envelopes are gorgeous.
I too saw the Onesie on SU on the 23rd, I can’t believe people & they are going to ruin it for everyone else :{
So shame on that person – hopefully she is reading this.
It is such a shame that someone decided to steal your idea!!!! How did they think they could do it without getting caught??? I work retail and you wouldn’t believe what I see!! I love your blog and check it daily. You have wonderful ideas that truely help us all. Thanks!!
Beautiful, elegant cards…your work is really wonderful..
Once again…you made some beautiful cards. Almost too pretty to send. (hee hee)
Sorry about someone using your ideas like it was their own. 🙁
I hope it never ruins for those of us who would NEVER do that. I love your ideas. And may use them, but never in a contest or like it was my idea.
Thanks Lauren. Keep on inspiring us!
Jules
Oh how elegant you make them look.. Thanks so much for caring enough to share you talents with us.. People oblivously do not take the time to read all the print. It’s gonna bite them when they least expect it. I am so glad someone loved you enough to turn the tables on them.. Your talents are so many and sharing them with all of us fuzzy-headed stampers does you proud. Again thanks so much MaryAnn
Thanks so much for sharing all the things that you do with us. I can’t wait for a new entry to show up in my mailbox so I can see what you’ve done now. You are absolutely the most creative person I know. I can recognize your cards that have been published even before I read the name. That’s how distinctive your work is. There have been a lot of good suggestions about how to handle the plagarist. I guess we should all give her the benefit of the doubt that she didn’t know it was yours, but come on, anyone would know that something that creative had to come from someone else and they should try to find the creator before they call it their own. Since her name must have been “up in lights” (I don’t know what Stamper’s Showcase is either) now she’s a celebrity in her own right. I hope her face is truly red and she’s learned a good lesson. Please don’t let one bad apple spoil it for the rest of us who enjoy your great creativity.
You are super talented. Please don’t let one bad egg ruin it for the rest of us. First off not a fan of her card on SS, I like yours much better. Secound do you think it’s possible that she saw it somewhere else and used it not knowing. I only say this because I have seen your idea used in so many places now. Had I not been a regular to your site I wouldn’t have known it was your template and not to use it for contests etc. Just a thought!
I love all of your creations and hope this doesn’t stop you from sharing them.
These are beautiful! just another reason to get all the Nestabilities Yeah!
Lauren–Thank you so much for all of the wonderful ideas you share! Your notecards and designer envelopes are gorgeous! I’m so sorry to hear about the person who stole your idea and tried to make it her own. We all know you were the creator. I love your site and all the amazing ideas you come up with, so thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity!
These are GORGEOUS, Lauren!! So dainty and elegant…absolutely LOVE them!!
gorgeous cards as always, and you are right – those envelops are WOWzers fantastic!!!
I saw the onesie on the Showcase over the weekend and was just hearbroken for you. Hopefully things can get worked out, as those of us who come here frequently know you were the original designer and ‘brains’ behind the whole idea. Goodness knows I can’t come up with great things like that! 😉 but I sure do like to look at them! 😀 thanks for sharing your creativity!
I’m sorry about that happening to your onesie card! One rotten apple will spoil the whole barrel! Your envelopes are beautiful and your cards too! TFS!
hi lauren! this was a cosmic connection!!! very beautiful! i thougth the same thing the other day, seeing that onsie card….have you seen a picture of it? not even close to how nice your are! sleeves are different than yours…not as cute, that’s for sure. i ahve also seen a swap card a whiel ago that was a onsie but still not as cute as yours! i will email you a picture of it if you’d like. 😉
regina
Beautiful work Lauren as always. I love coming to your blog and see what latest thing you have cooked up 😉 Thank you for sharing your obvious talent. I do not have in innate talent to create cards, ( i am not an intuitive cook either ;lol) like my trusty cookbook, I often look to people as yourself to help inspire me. For someone to post your work at thier own for notariety or monetary gain is really pretty low. i hope this resolves itself and you get your due credit. One thing tho – is you have such a following – people know who is the actual creator – talent. Have a great day
Lauren…These are all Gorgeous!!
Beautiful colors..and paper!!
Each one unique..ribbons..scallops..and
flowers really dress it up. I also love
the embossed paper.
Thanks for sharing “your” envelope
tutorial. Sorry to hear that others
abuse the word of “sharing”
I appreciate all your inspiring work!!
Look foward to seeing Lots more!!
Dee
Beautiful envies.
Was it you that one day last spring used a black eyelet and a tree from A-Muse stamps to make a tire swing? I can’t remember whose blog or where I saw it.
I cased that using SU’s oak tree (Lovely as a Tree) for a few swaps at convention, and it was chosen to be on Stamper’s Showcase Sept. 24th (if I have the date right).
If that was you, my deepest apologies.
I wish I could remember where I cased or stole that eyelet idea. I want to make more of the same.
What a fantastic idea Lauren and so simple too. I’m so sorry to hear about the onsie thing. That totally stinks! Just goes to show the morals of some people.
Hi Lauren,
Beautiful work – as always!
I’ve been making envelopes just like yours for the past few years for ‘odd’ sized cards etc. Does the fact that you have now put a copyright in the design mean that I now have to credit you for something I have been doing for a long time? This isn’t meant nastily but to point put that ideas sometimes occur to more than one person but not all of us copyright. I thought long and hard before posting this comment as I’m aware that some of your fans may take umbrage at a perceived criticism which isn’t what I mean to do at all. I merely wanted to point out that some good ideas are not always restricted to one person.
Hope all of you are well and that Alexa’s and Daisy’s recoveries are going well.
One –
These projects are absolutely stunning, as usual.
Two –
It’s awful that someone submitted your card for publication. Sometimes I have hesitated before posting things for the same reason. In the end I decide that sharing art is good, and I enjoy others shared art.
There are always going to be people with either bad intentions or bad actions. But in the stamping world, they are the minority I think.
You share beautiful things with us and I truly appreciate what you do and hope you continue.
Thanks for the candor and these lovely cards
Lauren,
Thanks for sharing with us! I’m very sorry to hear that people are taking advantage of your generosity. It’s sad to think that a bunch of us may end up being deprived of your great ideas, because a couple of dishonest people.
As for your envelopes… They are beautiful! You have no idea how much I enjoy reading your blog and looking at all of your beautiful creations. I could honestly stop reading all of the other blogs I read, but I could never stop looking at yours. It is my favorite.
Lauren thanks for doing the math! Love your envelopes.
First off I’m so sorry to hear that someone would do that! What a man sows he will reap. I believe that because of your generousity to so many of us, God will bless you. He has given you such creativity and you share it with us daily! Thanks so much I love all your ideas! Nancy
Your cards are just gorgeous Lauren!!! I am so sorry someone had to steal your card idea and get credit when it was NOT due!!! Please know I won’t ever do that to you and I hope you continue sharing your beautiful cards and inspirations with all of us!!!
Sincerely,
Jennifer 🙂
The Queen will reign no matter what gets in your path…you are number 1 in my book. Look forward to your blog everyday to see what new creation you have come up with.. am so jealous…hugs
Thank you so much for sharing your creativity with us:) I have been decorating my envies since I started stamping but nothing as elaborate as yours!! WOW!!
I’m sorry that your onsie card was copied and I HOPE it was just a big mistake and the person did not know it was your design.
Thanks again for sharing with us!
That makes me so mad that someone would steal your idea for their benefit. Some people just have no morals. You are the best and they suck!!
Love the envelopes. I may have to try to use up all my “ugly” non used paper for this. Thanks for the great tutorial!!
These envelopes are so cool. Thanks for also posting the link for the nestabilites. Can they be used for the cuttlebug?
I’m wondering the same thing that a previous poster asked. I’ve been making my own envelopes for years using this same pattern – now that you’ve copyrighted it, can I no longer take credit for my own work if I should show one on my blog? Or are you just copyrighting your directions that you wrote up?
what is stamper’s showcase?
tfs……
Lauren, These are just elegant!! Colors are beautiful! I’m waiting for my Scor-Pal. Should be here this week! Thanks for the tutorial! It will be one of my first projects!
Butterfly kisses to Alexa!
hugz
Hi, Lauren. I’m fairly new to visiting your blog and I’m hoping that you’ll clarify the whole copyrighting issues with your readers. I don’t think people are intentionally trying to “steal” your work. In the case of the onesie card on SS, other than the shape–it’s nothing like any of your designs. So, is it because you’ve copyrighted this shape that it can’t ever be submitted by anyone else for anything? I can understand someone wanting to get credit for the actual tutorial and such being blatantly idiotic, but I don’t think people realize you mean you don’t want anyone ever making a onesie card for any type of publication. Here’s a woman who put out a onesie template and maybe a demo would think–hey, I could use my punches…I don’t know…I completely respect your work, but I don’t really think someone intentionally tried to disrespect your wishes…I think there might just be some confusion.
http://www.houseofstirfry.com/chia/templates/onesie01.html
Another place someone might be inspired to make a onesie card
http://www.mybabyparty.com/onesiety.htm
I’m sorry I’m posting as an anonymous party, but I know how vicious people can be when people are questioned. I mean you no disrespect–you are extremely talented and we’re grateful that you share your talent. It’s just that this woman who submitted this card to SS may not be aware of your blog, may not be aware of where the idea originated–OR may have seen another template and modified it with the punches…you just don’t know that she disrespected you and now all of these people are assuming she did and her name is out there…it’s just not right.
I totally agree with Anonymous. There are only so many ways to take a rectangle card and make it into a onesie. I think to bash the other card maker without knowing the details is irresponsible. I had to get over this type of stuff years ago. I came up with a couple of original ideas only to have someone else either be inspired by my idea or come up with something similar and get all the credit because they were a “NAME” or that just when they posted their card the “RIGHT” person made a comment on their thread. Bottom line it just doesn’t matter. No one will get rich or famous for sending in a card to a magazine or contest. Most the time all you get if the card is published is a copy of the magazine, big whoop! It takes a lot of hard work to earn a place in the stamping world as a “NAME”. We all know who the contributors are because we enjoy what they share with us on a daily basis. Most of the people here are honest and are not trying to steal anything for profit. There is no profit to be made by a one hit wonder. You need to be consistent just like Lauren is and she will continue to be because her heart is in the right place. Like so many of the other “NAME” stampers out there without whom I would have nothing to do in the morning while enjoying my cup of coffee.
I have a question about copyrighting. Can you just say your stuff is copyright protected and put your little disclaimer up or is there a legal process you need to go thru?
What if I receive a card from someone as a gift and I sell it or publish it not knowing that it was a copyrighted idea from someone else? Maybe I don’t read your blog or go to SCS. I’m sure that happens. I might like someone’s idea and copy it not knowing it came from anyone other than the person I received it from.
I don’t want to cause a big uproar but if you don’t want someone using your stuff then don’t put it out there. I don’t think you can control this. The internet is so huge, how could you? Are you prepared to go to court over it? If not then why bother copyrighting?
These are beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
I guess we’re all learning stuff about copywrite these days. One thing I wanted to point out was the SS person might have just sent it in to SU! not for their contest OR dropped it into the basket if she did it as swaps for the Anaheim Regional or something. Anyway, it’s not proof that it was submitted for a contest since it ended up there. Sorry it happened, though, since it did look quite a bit like yours. For what it’s worth, a friend of mine sent me a copy of HER onesie card pattern over three years ago, but it didn’t have the scalloped punch arm & leg holes like yours. That was the big difference with yours and I really preferred how yours looked to the other similar ones.
Like someone before me, I am posting anonymously because I know how viscious some can be. Now, before I post this copyright information, I want to say that I am a devout follower of Lauren. I love her work and think she is incredibly talented and probably my favorite designer. However, I don’t think inaccurate information should be passed around on the internet and I think it is unfortunate that this poor woman’s name has been dragged through the mud because someone didn’t have all of the facts. There’s no telling the amount of email she has received because of it and I’m surprised an apology has not yet been posted. Something is not considered to have a copyright just because you say it has one.
From the government’s website concerning copyright basics: http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#wci
“What Is Not Protected by Copyright?
Several categories of material are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection. These include among others:
…(snipped)…
Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration
Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (for example: standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources)”
There are only so many ways to cut a card and design an envelope. Even so, as you can see above, the process is can not have a copyright.
These are gorgeous and the perfect wrapper for your fab cards! TFS!
I haven’t seen this “other persons” submission, but I’d like to comment on the fact that I made this onesie there is so much controvery about OVER 4 years ago, as a birth announcement. I used liquid applique instead of paper for all the trim, but otherwise it’s the SAME! I also made some with paper trim as well, granted not w/ the nesties(they weren’t available). And I know “I” didn’t copy Yours. I used my circle punch and buttons and all that. And if I submitted it to a publication or whatever, then I’m free to do that. You didn’t see me on here saying you copied from me. I’ve been stamping and creating outside the box for over 16 years, so there’s lots of things you newbies are just figuring out that the oldies have already created at one time or another. Maybe not with the fancy new gadgets, but with the same outcome. Yes, we can still learn new things, that’s what I love about our craft.
Yes, if the “other person” was truly doing copy and paste from your directions I can understand your issues, but are you POSITIVE that’s what happened? Before you all start roasting somebody, you should have all the Facts. Now, I’ll probably be the one you all start roasting, but I’m a big girl and can take it.
And to the person who “copied” Lauren’s idea, I’ll say I’m sorry for all the things these kind “ladies” have said about you. You keep creating and you really should let others know if an idea you submit is an idea you got from someone else. If you even know that information. That’s only proper. But you aren’t a thief or a terrible person. KEEP CREATING!
Hi Lauren. I know this is a touchy subject for both sides and I’ve been debating on whether or not I should even jump in here, but here goes. As for the onesie, it does appear that the individual used your template. It amazes me when people think that no one will notice. Perhaps it was “innocent” but it sure seems to be too much of a coincedence.
As for the envelopes, I think this is a stickier situation since envelopes are more “generic” than an idea for a specific card design. For example, I have an envelope book I bought back in 1994 and it has dimensions to create all kinds of envelopes. There is actually a template in there that has the exact dimensions you listed (they didn’t use the scor-pal though).
There are always going to be people out there who want to “steal” ideas, but I hope this won’t prevent you from posting your wonderful creations in the future!
Wow – who knew so much copyright debate would spring up from a craft/stamping blog. I love crafting – all aspects of it and I love to visit a lot of stamping blogs. Unfortunately, I don’t get paid to do it – I actually earn my living as a librarian. I work for the Dept. of Defense and I recently had to rewrite the copyright policy for our College. I have been debating for a long time whether to “pipe” in the discussion or not. I did try to do some rather specific searching on copyright as it relates to the craft industry – to very little avail. But there have been some valid points made about copyright in the previous posts.
One of the most pertinent being – Ideas cannot be copyrighted. Many of the previous posters are correct – there are only so many ways you can cut up a piece of paper. Many of us use the same stamps, the same paper, the same markers, the same punches. However, the template instructions that Lauren wrote – most definitely CAN be copyrighted and in some case her template itself could be copyrighted as well. Basic oragami box shapes have been around for eons, so they would not be “copyrightable” (if that is a word). It would be impossible to claim that any one person owns the copyright to an envelope template. Once again, though, the exact wording of the directions that Lauren spells out is copyright material.
I am not a lawyer and am certainly not offering up any legal advice. Copyright law is VERY complex and there are hundreds of lawyers out there who make a lot of money interpreting these issues.
I think we can all agree that no one wants to stifle or stop Lauren’s creativity or that any of us would be happy if someone took what we did and passed it off as their own. I hope some of this information is helpful and relates a little more to the crafting world than general copyright information.
haha
Hi, thank you for this video. It has just acted as a conformation to me.
My developer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on several websites for about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform. I have heard fantastic things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress content into it? Any help would be really appreciated!
I have never read such a wonderful article and I am coming back tomorrow to continue reading.
